On August 2, 1776, delegates started to sign the Declaration of Independence. Federal workers were granted an unpaid vacation on July 4th in 1870. It was become a paid holiday for them in 1941.

John Adams wrote his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776, outlining the initial details of how Independence Day will be observed. In every state in the union, he spoke of “pomp and parade, with displays, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations.” But it wasn’t until 1791 that the phrase “Independence Day” was coined.
