American citizens are now encouraged by federal statute to donate part of their time on this day in citizen action organisations.

Some make up for this by opening on Washington’s Birthday. Americans are encouraged by recent federal law to serve in civic organisations on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Public transportation networks may or may not run on time.

Weekend long

One of the American public holidays that usually results in a long weekend is Martin Luther King Day, which occurs on a Monday.

Background

An influential advocate for racial rights was Martin Luther King. He played a key role in the effort to abolish racial segregation in the US. The “I Have A Dream” speech is his most well-known speech. He was a proponent of peaceful protest and the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1968, he was assassinated.

A push to make Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a national holiday was launched in 1968, not long after his death. Trade unions took the initiative in the fight for the federal holiday when the initial bill was put up. It received approval in 1976. Stevie Wonder’s song “Happy Birthday” and a petition with six million signatures helped the legislation become a law in 1983. Although it wasn’t celebrated in every state until 2000, Martin Luther King Day was first commemorated in 1986. Wyoming’s state legislature declared Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Wyoming Equality Day to be official holidays in 1990.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY’S HISTORY

Labor unions pushed the idea of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a holiday. Following King’s death, U.S. Representative John Conyers and U.S. Senator Edward Brooke sponsored legislation in Congress to declare King’s birthday a public holiday. The measure was originally put to a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979, but it failed to get the necessary five votes to pass. Two of the primary objections raised by opponents were the cost of a paid holiday for federal workers and the fact that King never held public office, so a holiday in his honour would go against long-standing custom. Only George Washington and Christopher Columbus had national holidays named in their honour at the time.

The King Center soon started requesting assistance from the business world and the general public. When artist Stevie Wonder organised the Rally for Peace Press Conference in 1981 and released the track “Happy Birthday” to publicise the cause in 1980, the effectiveness of this tactic was solidified. The petition to get the measure passed by Congress garnered six million signatures, making it the biggest pro-issue petition in American history.

At first, President Reagan opposed the holiday due to financial considerations. However, on November 2, 1983, President Reagan approved a measure sponsored by Representative Katie Hall that established a federal holiday in King’s memory. The legislation was approved by the House of Representatives with a vote of 338 to 90 and the Senate with a vote of 78 to 22. The inaugural New Year’s Day celebration took place on January 20, 1986. Due to the requirements of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, it is honoured on the third Monday of January rather than on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s actual birthday.
