In a free, open event in The Cooper Union’s Great Hall, join Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and author, podcaster, and former federal prosecutor Preet Bharara for a discussion about leadership and preserving American democracy. The occasion is referred to as Cooper’s 2024 John Jay Iselin Memorial Lecture and will be broadcast on Bharara’s popular national podcast, “Stay Tuned with Preet.”

For more than 36 years, Nancy Pelosi has served as San Francisco’s congressional representative. After becoming the first woman to be elected Speaker of the House in 2007, she presided as the 52nd Speaker of the House of Representatives.As the first person to do so in more than 60 years, Pelosi made history once more in January 2019 when she reclaimed her place as the nation’s second in line for the president. Under two Democratic administrations, Speaker Pelosi served as the primary author of landmark pieces of legislation including the Affordable Care Act and the American Rescue Plan. She has been the House Democratic leader for 20 years and was once the party’s whip. At a ceremony at Seneca Falls, New York, the cradle of the American women’s rights movement, she was honoured by being inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2013.From 2009 until 2017, Preet Bharara was the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Bharara headed an office of more than 200 assistant US attorneys that handled cases involving terrorism, financial and healthcare fraud, governmental corruption, and more. They also oversaw the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil matters. As a Distinguished Scholar in Residence, Bharara joined the faculty of the NYU School of Law in 2017. In addition to being the co-founder of CAFE Studios, he is the host of the acclaimed podcast “Stay Tuned with Preet,” which discusses problems of justice and fairness.

The John Jay Iselin Memorial Lecture pays tribute to The Cooper Union’s 10th President, who presided from 1987 to 2000. With the creation of shows like The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour and Nature, Jay Iselin played a significant role in turning public television into an important force in broadcast journalism. He was also the general manager and president of Channel 13. Past Iselin lecturers have included political activist and law professor Zephyr Teachout, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Ed Yong, White House photographer Pete Souza, NYC Mayor Eric Adams, and Ed Yong.
